Victoria Jones, daughter of acclaimed actor Tommy Lee Jones, has died, according to reports. She was 34 years old.
Jones was found unresponsive in a San Francisco hotel on New Year’s Day, January 1, in the early hours of the morning. Law enforcement sources first reported the news to TMZ.
The San Francisco fire department confirmed responding to a call at the Fairmont hotel at 2:52 a.m. “Our units responded to the scene, performed an assessment and declared one person deceased,” a spokesperson stated, adding that the San Francisco Police Department and the medical examiner’s office subsequently took over the investigation.
The cause of death remains unknown at this time.
According to reports from The Daily Mail, a hotel guest alerted staff after discovering Jones unresponsive in a hallway.
Victoria Jones is survived by her father and brother, Austin, 43. She is the second child of Tommy Lee Jones and his wife, Kimberlea Cloughley.
Jones followed in her father’s footsteps early in her life, appearing in films like Men in Black II and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. She also had a role in the television series One Tree Hill.
During promotion for The Three Burials, Tommy Lee Jones spoke of his daughter’s talents, saying, “She’s a good actress, has her SAG [Screen Actors Guild] card, speaks impeccable Spanish. When she was a baby, I told Leticia, her nurse, to speak to her in Spanish.”
He also recounted a story to The New Yorker about a teenage Victoria’s reluctance to adhere to the early call times required on a film set. “She had to get up at 5am for her part,” Jones said. “One morning, she wouldn’t get out of bed. I said: ‘Honey, this is work.’ But she wouldn’t budge.
“So I fired her. Then, without telling me, the production staff went over and woke her and rushed her out to the set just in time.”
The father and daughter were frequently seen together on the red carpet, including at the Tokyo film festival in October 2018, where Tommy Lee Jones served on the jury.
Tommy Lee Jones, 79, is an Academy Award and Golden Globe winner, known for his roles in films such as The Fugitive, JFK, Lincoln, In the Valley of Elah, and No Country for Old Men. The news of his daughter’s passing is a somber moment for the industry, highlighting the personal tragedies that can affect even the most celebrated figures.
