Tonali Fit for Italy vs Northern Ireland | Gattuso Warns of Direct Play

Italy’s midfield appears set for a boost ahead of their upcoming match, as key player Sandro Tonali is expected to be available despite missing Newcastle United’s recent 2-0 derby defeat against Sunderland on Sunday.

However, Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni remains a doubt for the contest, though he did participate in a limited capacity during training. Italy manager Luciano Gattuso also indicated that striker Gianluca Scamacca “is a little further behind” in his recovery.

Gattuso, a 2006 World Cup champion, addressed the media and highlighted Northern Ireland’s direct style of play, stating Italy will need to adjust their approach accordingly. He described their opponents as favoring a “direct approach.”

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill responded to Gattuso’s assessment, stating, “we don’t consider any of that” when formulating his team’s strategy.

“They really believe a great deal in what they’re doing, with the second balls and they like to play direct, vertical football,” Gattuso added. “They are certainly a team that when they get players into the box, both with crosses and from dead-ball situations, they’re incredible.”

Gattuso acknowledged the energy and stamina of the Northern Ireland squad, but emphasized that their directness is “their main skillset” and “where they will cause us the most problems.” He believes Italy will face a challenge adapting to their opponent’s approach.

“I haven’t seen a team that’s necessarily going to be keeping the ball and dragging you out of position in the middle of the park,” he added. “They play very direct and everything that they do, they do it in an impressive fashion.”
