Toyama Prefecture announced personnel changes for teachers and school staff on Monday, March 23, 2026, impacting 1,758 individuals. The reshuffling, which takes effect at the end of the fiscal year, represents a decrease of 119 positions compared to the previous year.
The changes include the appointment of 191 recent principals and vice principals, with the youngest taking on leadership roles at ages 40, 41, and 50 in middle schools, elementary schools, and prefectural high schools, respectively. A total of 85 individuals were newly promoted to the position of vice principal.
According to the Toyama County Board of Education, 38 women were newly appointed as vice principals, bringing the total number of female vice principals to 191 – representing 50.0% of all vice principals. Currently, 99 of the prefecture’s 288 principals are women, accounting for 34.4% of the total, while women comprise 43.3% of all school administrators at 290 individuals.
The number of retiring staff members this year is 318, a significant drop from the 522 recorded last year, attributed to the impact of extended retirement provisions. The prefecture plans to assign 63 nutritional instructors across the county, an increase of one position.
“We will continue to promote responses to various challenges such as modest-class education, special support education, ICT education, and working-style reform,” said Shinichi Hiroshima, the Board of Education’s superintendent. The personnel changes reflect an ongoing effort to address evolving educational needs within the prefecture.
