Trittin: Nuclear Power Not Clean or Affordable – EU Strategy Criticized

The European Union’s recent discussion of nuclear power’s role in the continent’s energy future is facing criticism, with some arguing that a renewed focus on atomic energy is not a viable solution. The debate comes as nations grapple with energy independence and affordability concerns.
Former German Green Party parliamentarian Jürgen Trittin has challenged assertions made by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding a “renaissance” of nuclear energy, calling them inaccurate. Trittin stated this during an interview on Deutschlandfunk.

According to Trittin, affordable nuclear energy is only achievable through subsidies. He warned that pursuing nuclear power in an effort to reduce reliance on imported oil and gas could simply shift dependence to uranium imports – and potentially, once again, to Russia. He cited the construction of a nuclear power plant in Hungary, in collaboration with the Russian state atomic energy corporation Rosatom, as an example. The reliance on Russian energy sources is a growing concern for many European nations.

At an international nuclear energy conference in Paris on March 10, 2026, EU Commission President von der Leyen characterized the move away from nuclear power as a mistake and announced a new strategy for modular reactors. This move underscores the differing views within the EU regarding the future of energy policy.
German Environment Minister Schneider criticized von der Leyen’s announcement as “backward-looking,” and affirmed Germany’s commitment to phasing out nuclear energy. Schneider’s comments highlight the ongoing debate about the role of nuclear power in Europe’s energy transition.
