Washington D.C. – U.S. And Israeli strikes against Iran early Saturday have drawn largely supportive reactions from Republican lawmakers, while Democrats are calling for a congressional vote to limit President Donald Trump’s authority to escalate military action. The strikes, described as “massive combat operations” by the White House, mark a significant escalation in tensions between the U.S. And Iran and have prompted concerns about a wider regional conflict.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune applauded the president’s actions, commending the “bravery” of U.S. Service members. “Despite the dogged efforts of the president and his administration, the Iranian regime has refused the diplomatic off-ramps that would peacefully resolve these national security concerns,” Thune said.

Speaker Mike Johnson, who was briefed prior to the strikes, stated he is in “close contact” with President Trump and the administration as the “operation proceeds.” The development underscores growing regional tensions and the potential for further escalation.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a staunch supporter of President Trump, celebrated the strikes, stating on X, “the end of the largest state sponsor of terrorism is upon us” and predicting “freedom” for the Iranian people. He further posted, “My mind is racing with the thought that the murderous ayatollah’s regime in Iran will soon be no more. The biggest change in the Middle East in a thousand years is upon us.”

The strikes come as President Trump has called for the overthrow of the Iranian government, according to reports. The administration has indicated the operation is aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear program and weakening the current regime.

Democrats are responding to the strikes by demanding a war powers vote in Congress, seeking to check President Trump’s authority to wage war. This call for congressional oversight reflects concerns about the potential for an extended and costly conflict. Congressional reactions have been largely divided along party lines.

According to early reports, Iran has already launched retaliatory attacks. President Trump warned that if Iran were to retaliate, the U.S. Would respond “with a force that has never been seen,” as reported by NU. The announcement could influence future diplomatic talks and international alliances.

Republicans have largely praised Trump’s decision to undertake the military action, with an eye towards what they describe as liberating the Iranian people. GOP lawmakers have rallied behind the president following the announcement of the strikes.
