U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Sunday, March 8, 2026, that the conclusion of conflict with Iran will be determined in conjunction with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In an interview with the Times of Israel, Trump indicated he would consider Netanyahu’s input, though he retains final decision-making authority.

“I think it’s a joint decision to a certain extent. We are constantly discussing. I will make the decision at the appropriate time, but all considerations will be taken into account,” Trump said.
The President asserted that Iran posed an existential threat to Israel without his and Netanyahu’s leadership.
“Iran would destroy Israel and the region around it. We are working together. We have destroyed a country that wanted to destroy Israel,” he stated.
When asked if Israel could continue military operations independently should the U.S. Halt its involvement, Trump declined to speculate.
“I don’t think that will be necessary,” Trump responded.
He also refrained from establishing a definitive timeline for the conflict, despite White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt suggesting it was expected to last four to six weeks.
Trump’s comments highlight the significant influence Netanyahu has on U.S. Decision-making regarding the ongoing military campaign, which began on February 28th in conjunction with Israel. The development underscores growing regional tensions and the complex interplay of international alliances.
The strikes resulted in the deaths of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Defense Minister Amir Hatami and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Commander Mohammed Pakpour.
The interview took place shortly after Iranian state media announced that the Assembly of Experts had appointed Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as the next Supreme Leader.
Hours earlier, Trump told ABC News that the next Iranian leader would not “last long” without White House approval.
“We’ll witness what happens,” Trump said in response to Mojtaba’s appointment.
