Former U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Israeli President Isaac Herzog, taking issue with Herzog’s decision not to grant clemency to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The exchange highlights a rare instance of direct rebuke between the two leaders and underscores the complex political dynamics within Israel.
‘SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF’
Trump sharply criticized Herzog, stating, “There’s a president who refuses to pardon him. I think that man should be ashamed of himself for not issuing a pardon in this ongoing case. It’s disgraceful that he wouldn’t. He should pardon him.”
HERZOG’S RESPONSE
Israeli President Isaac Herzog responded to Trump’s criticism, defending Israel’s judicial independence. He stated, “Israel is a sovereign state under the rule of law.”
KAN, Israel’s state broadcaster, reported Herzog’s office released a statement responding to Trump’s remarks regarding Netanyahu’s potential pardon.
Herzog explained that he has “repeatedly stated” that Netanyahu’s request is being processed according to the established procedures of the Justice Ministry, and that he can only make a decision once recommendations are presented to him.
After the process is complete, he will review the request without being influenced by any external or internal pressure, Herzog said. Responding directly to Trump’s statement that he “should be ashamed of himself” for not issuing a pardon, Herzog reiterated, “Israel is a sovereign state under the rule of law.”
