The United Arab Emirates has asserted that both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces have effectively removed themselves from any future role in shaping Sudan’s government, urging the international community to focus its support on Sudanese civilians. The statement comes as Sudan’s civil war continues to escalate, with a particularly dire situation unfolding in the city of El Fasher.
During a session of the UN Security Council on Thursday, February 26, 2026, UAE Ambassador to the United Nations Mohamed Abu Shahab stated, “For more than two years, the UAE, regardless of the repeated lies, has been clear that both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces have excluded themselves from shaping the future of Sudan.”
Abu Shahab continued, “We see time for the international community to accept this reality. No speech delivered in this hall by a representative of either warring party can hide who they are or what they have turn into. The international community must turn to the Sudanese civilians, not their oppressors.” This call for a shift in focus underscores the growing international concern over the ongoing conflict and its devastating impact on the Sudanese people.
The UAE’s ambassador highlighted the immense suffering caused by the conflict, which has now lasted for over 900 days. “For more than 900 days, the civil war in Sudan has engulfed a nation, and human suffering increases every day,” Abu Shahab said. “At the same time, the situation in El Fasher is deteriorating every day.”
The UAE has also refuted accusations leveled against it by one of the warring factions, dismissing them as false. Al Khalij reports that the UAE believes these accusations are a maneuver to distract from documented war crimes. Sky News Arabia and Al Watan Voice also reported on Abu Shahab’s remarks to the Security Council.
The UAE’s position reflects a growing international sentiment that a lasting resolution to the Sudanese conflict requires prioritizing the needs and voices of the country’s civilian population. The move underscores the necessitate for a latest approach to the crisis, one that moves beyond supporting the warring parties and focuses on building a sustainable future for all Sudanese citizens.
