Uber is planning to invest up to $1.25 billion over five years in electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian.

Ride-hailing giant Uber and electric vehicle maker Rivian have announced a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the development and deployment of autonomous vehicles. As part of the agreement, Uber will initially invest $300 million in Rivian.

The total investment could reach $1.25 billion by 2031, contingent upon Rivian meeting undisclosed developmental milestones. This partnership underscores the growing investment in autonomous vehicle technology within the transportation sector.

According to a company spokesperson, Uber will receive approximately 19.55 million shares of Rivian upon regulatory approval of the initial investment, representing roughly 1.6% of Rivian’s capital. That stake will increase with subsequent investments.

The initial phase of the collaboration will focus on deploying 10,000 fully autonomous R2 robotaxis, beginning in San Francisco and Miami in 2028, with plans to expand to 25 cities across the United States, Europe, and Canada by the finish of 2031.

The agreement as well includes an option for Uber to purchase up to an additional 40,000 R2 robotaxis starting in 2030.

Uber has been actively forging partnerships in the robotaxi space. Just last week, the company reached an agreement with Zoox (an Amazon company) to integrate its autonomous vehicle service into the Uber app in Las Vegas this year and Los Angeles in 2027.

Two days prior, Uber also partnered with Motional (Hyundai) to launch a similar service in Las Vegas.

An Uber spokesperson stated that the company has established partnerships with over twenty-five companies focused on autonomous vehicles and is already facilitating millions of autonomous rides through its platform.

Uber aims to offer autonomous rides in approximately fifteen cities – half of which will be international – by the end of 2026, with current deployments underway in cities like Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, Phoenix, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Riyadh.

Uber has also made direct investments in vehicle manufacturers, including a $300 million investment in Lucid in 2025, and in companies specializing in autonomous driving software, such as Nuro.
