Inspired by the Christmas film “Home Alone,” a British drug dealer attempted to safeguard his operation with a series of booby traps, ultimately receiving a seven-year prison sentence.

The film’s premise centers around defending a home from intruders.

In this case, though, the attempt to protect a large-scale drug operation – using methods that resulted in a far less pleasant outcome for both neighbors and potential trespassers than experienced by the film’s protagonist, Kevin McCallister.

Ian Claughton (60) rigged three properties in the village of Grimethorpe in South Yorkshire with tripwires, homemade pipe bombs, and an improvised flamethrower, according to The Guardian.

Approximately 130 homes were evacuated in May 2024 although police searched the properties.

“If you’re sitting there thinking this sounds a bit like ‘Home Alone,’ you’d be right. That’s actually what Ian Claughton said he was trying to do,” prosecutor Helen Chapman told the court.

Police also discovered the following message in one of the houses:

Congratulations. Well done getting this far. Now it might be wise to get a coffin measured up and say your goodbyes. This gate is charged with over 50,000 volts. Enter at your own risk. You have been warned.
