A drone originating from Russia violated Latvian airspace on Wednesday and crashed in the eastern Krāslava region, according to Latvia’s Defense Ministry.
Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds later stated that preliminary information suggests the drone was Ukrainian and traveling towards Russia.
Sprūds was en route to Ukraine on Wednesday but has cut his trip short and is returning to Latvia due to the drone incident, he said.
Power Plant Struck
In a separate incident, the pipe of the Auvere power plant in Estonia was hit by a drone. Estonian intelligence services reported no injuries occurred.
The drone entered Estonian airspace from Russia, but authorities also believe this drone was Ukrainian, Reuters reported, citing Estonian officials.
The drone that struck the power plant was not targeted at Estonia, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said in a statement on Wednesday.
However, he emphasized that the drone incident is a direct consequence of Russia’s full-scale war of aggression and referenced similar occurrences across Europe.
Drone Incident in Lithuania
Ukraine has recently targeted several Russian sites with drones, including energy facilities on Russia’s Baltic Sea coast, near Finland and Estonia.
The Russian military reported that Russia was attacked with nearly 400 drones overnight into Wednesday.
