Ukrainian forces have confirmed damage to a Russian A-50 airborne early warning and control aircraft following a strike on an aviation plant on March 17. The attack highlights Ukraine’s continued ability to reach targets within Russia, even as the conflict enters its third year.

According to a statement from Ukraine’s General Staff, the A-50 was undergoing maintenance at the facility and was potentially awaiting modernization when it was struck. The plant is located in the Novgorod region of Russia.

In a separate operation on the night of March 19-20, Ukrainian troops also targeted facilities at the Alchevsk Metallurgical Plant in the occupied Luhansk region. The General Staff reported this information on Friday, March 20.

The Alchevsk plant is reportedly involved in the production of components for artillery shells, specifically the casting and primary processing of large-caliber blanks, as well as the production and repair of armored steel used in Russian military equipment.

infrastructure at the Vostochnyi training ground near Novopetrivka in the occupied Zaporizhzhia region was also targeted during the recent attacks.

The A-50 aircraft is designed to detect and track air and sea targets, relaying information to command centers and guiding fighter jets and strike aircraft. Often described as a “flying radar,” the A-50 can monitor a wide area, up to 650 kilometers, and simultaneously track multiple objects, transmitting data to other aircraft.

The aircraft typically has a crew of around 15 people. Last year, Ukrainian forces reportedly damaged several A-50 aircraft during “Operation Forest,” according to earlier reports.

The extent of the damage from the recent strikes and any potential Russian losses are still being assessed. The development underscores the ongoing intensity of the conflict and Ukraine’s focus on disrupting Russia’s military capabilities.
