Negotiations between Kyiv and Washington regarding a potential peace settlement in Ukraine are set to resume this Saturday, following a several-week pause. Ukrainian negotiators are reportedly already en route to the United States. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Thursday evening that a new meeting with U.S. Representatives regarding a peace settlement in Ukraine was scheduled for Saturday, stating that Ukraine is doing everything possible to ensure the talks are meaningful.
The Ukrainian delegation includes Rustam Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council; Kyrylo Budanov, Head of the President’s Office; Serhiy Kyslytsia, his Deputy; and Davyd Arakhamia, leader of the “Servant of the People” faction in the Verkhovna Rada.
While the U.S. Representatives have not yet been announced, Ukraine views the resumption of the dialogue positively.
“Ukraine’s interest now is to capture care of itself while Russia is in such an uncertain state,” assessed Doctor of Historical Sciences Andris Grubiņķis. “While further sanctions have not been eased and there is uncertainty regarding the supply of Russian oil to the European Union, it is important for us to define the parameters of these potential agreements. Obviously, the talks could focus on territorial issues and it is very important for us to work with Europeans here.”
Grubiņķis referenced statements made by Finnish President Alexander Stubb, suggesting a need to freeze the conflict along the current front lines – a position also held by Ukraine.
Communicating this position to U.S. President Donald Trump and securing his support is considered crucial.
Ukraine’s negotiating position is also bolstered by recent developments – a successful counteroffensive launched at the end of January, and high demand for Ukrainian combat drones and expertise in countering Iranian drones in the Middle East.
Predicting the outcome of these talks remains difficult. Ukraine, still, is committed to continuing the process, hoping that the lack of progress in Iran may incentivize the U.S. To achieve a positive outcome in Ukraine. However, You’ll see no indications from Russia that it is interested in ending the invasion.
On the contrary, military preparations suggest a continuation of the war for at least another year. This assessment is supported by information released Thursday by Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, indicating Russia plans to mobilize an additional 409,000 people this year – roughly the same number Ukraine has killed or wounded in combat in previous years.
Syrskyi also noted that with improving weather conditions, the aggressor has intensified its activities on the front lines, though Ukrainian forces are successfully holding the Russian army.
“We are almost in the same positions, only the losses are increasing. The Russians are unable to break through our defenses and are trying to do so every day,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a visit to the United Kingdom.
Zelenskyy also pointed out that Russia has not achieved any of its initial objectives – Donbas remains un-occupied, the Ukrainian capital has not been captured, and Russia loses 30 to 35 thousand people each month, meaning there is no aggressor victory as claimed by the Kremlin’s disinformation campaigns.
CONTEXT:
Russia’s full-scale, unprovoked invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. Kremlin propaganda threatened to occupy Kyiv within days, but strong Ukrainian resistance prevented the Kremlin from realizing its plans.
Following setbacks, the Kremlin withdrew its army from the Kyiv region but continued its offensive in other regions. In the autumn of 2022, the Ukrainian army managed to liberate the Kharkiv region and part of the Kherson region, raising hopes for the possibility of defeating the enemy.
However, Ukraine’s counteroffensive launched in the summer of 2023 was less successful, which the Ukrainian army attributed to insufficient arms supplies from Western allies, as well as the extensive defensive lines and minefields established by the Russian army. A positional war with exhausting battles has continued for several years.
Despite multiple rounds of talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. Regarding peace in Ukraine, particularly following the return of Donald Trump to office, no concrete results have been achieved.
