Kyiv and Washington concluded two days of talks on Sunday, March 22, 2026, regarding potential pathways to end the conflict with Russia, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggesting a possible new exchange of prisoners of war as a positive sign.

The discussions, held in Miami, Florida, did not include Russian representatives. A planned trilateral meeting involving Washington, Kyiv and Moscow in Abu Dhabi was postponed due to escalating conflict in the Middle East, according to Zelenskyy.

While acknowledging the progress, Zelenskyy indicated that the United States is currently prioritizing the situation in Iran and the broader region. “the attention of the American side is currently focused primarily on the situation around Iran and the wider region, but the war of Russia against Ukraine must likewise end,” he stated.

The Ukrainian president also urged allies to maintain sanctions pressure on Russia, emphasizing the need for stricter measures. This comes as reports indicate Russia has suffered over 1.2 million casualties in Ukraine, and is attempting to replenish its forces through mass recruitment in poorer regions.

Zelenskyy also noted increased Russian attacks along the front lines and higher Russian losses on the battlefield. The development underscores the ongoing intensity of the fighting and the challenges facing both sides as the conflict continues.

The outcome of the talks could lead to further prisoner exchanges, which Zelenskyy described as “a really good sign and confirmation that diplomacy works.” He expressed hope that such an exchange would be arranged. The potential for prisoner swaps highlights ongoing diplomatic efforts even as active combat continues.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent criticism of NATO and Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico’s stance on Ukraine have drawn attention to divisions among key international actors. These differing perspectives could complicate efforts to forge a unified response to the conflict.
