Eighty-five member states of the United Nations (UN) have issued a joint statement condemning Israel’s expanding control in the West Bank. The move highlights increasing international concern over the escalating situation in the region.
“We strongly condemn the unilateral decisions and actions of Israel aimed at expanding Israel’s illegal presence in the West Bank,” the statement, released Tuesday local time, read. “These decisions are contrary to Israel’s obligations under international law and must be reversed immediately.”
“we underscore our strong opposition to all forms of annexation,” the joint statement continued, as reported by AFP on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

Last week, Israel’s security cabinet approved a series of measures supported by far-right ministers to tighten control over the West Bank, which is administered by the Palestinian Authority under agreements dating back to the 1990s.
On Sunday, the Israeli government also approved a process to register land in the West Bank as “state land,” drawing further international criticism.
“We reaffirm our rejection of all steps aimed at changing the demographic composition, character and status of the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem,” the 85-nation joint statement further elaborated.
“These steps violate international law, undermine ongoing efforts for peace and stability in the region, are contrary to the Comprehensive Plan, and jeopardize the prospects for reaching a peace agreement that ends the conflict,” it added.
The statement was issued on behalf of 85 member states, including Saudi Arabia, China, and Russia, as well as international organizations such as the European Union, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called on Israel to reverse its land registration policy, calling it “destabilizing” and “a violation of law.”
More than 500,000 Israeli citizens live in settlements and outposts in the West Bank, excluding annexed East Jerusalem, which are considered illegal under international law.
Approximately three million Palestinians reside in the territory, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967.
