UNC Men’s Golf Finishes Second at Fighting Irish Classic, Carson Bertagnole Wins Individual Title

The University of North Carolina Men’s Golf team secured a second-place finish at the Fighting Irish Classic today, with freshman Carson Bertagnole claiming the individual medalist honors.

The tournament, held at Notre Dame’s Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Indiana, concluded Tuesday with UCLA taking the team title at seven-under par, three strokes ahead of the Tar Heels. UNC entered the final round with a one-stroke lead, but UCLA rallied for the win; they were the only two teams to finish under par. Bertagnole’s victory marks a strong start to his collegiate career and adds to the program’s recent success.

Bertagnole finished with a six-under par score of 204 after rounds of 67-64-73, ultimately winning a three-way playoff against Iowa’s Maxwell Tjoa and Tennessee’s Lance Simpson with a 35-foot putt on the second playoff hole. According to UNC’s Athletic Department, this win makes Bertagnole the tenth Tar Heel to earn medalist honors under head coach Andrew Dibitetto. Teammates Andrew Riley and Keaton Vo tied for 13th place at two-over par. You can find more information about collegiate golf rankings at GolfStat.

This result follows a successful fall season for the Tar Heels, which included a four-way tie for first place at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational and a second-place finish at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup, where the championship match was televised on the Golf Channel. The team will now prepare for the spring season, building on the momentum from their strong fall performances. Coach Dibitetto and the team will continue to evaluate their performance and refine their strategy as they look ahead to the remainder of the season.
