United Airlines’ Longest Boeing 737 MAX Routes Span Across Continents

United Airlines is utilizing its Boeing 737 MAX fleet on increasingly long routes, with flights to Alaska, Europe, and Latin America representing the carrier’s longest distances flown by the aircraft type.

Currently, the longest 737 MAX route operated by United is from Newark Liberty International Airport to Anchorage, Alaska, covering 2,927 nautical miles (5,422 kilometers). This seasonal summer route, flown with a 737 MAX 8, takes approximately seven hours and 48 minutes to reach Anchorage. The airline also flies seasonal 737 MAX 8 routes from Washington-Dulles and Houston to Anchorage, ranking them among its longest. These extended routes demonstrate United’s confidence in the 737 MAX’s capabilities and fuel efficiency, allowing the airline to optimize its network and reduce operating costs.

Beyond Alaska, United operates a unique transatlantic route from Newark to Funchal, Portugal, with the 737 MAX 8, a distance of 2,761 nautical miles (5,114 kilometers). The airline also serves several destinations in Central and South America, including Panama City, Costa Rica, and Guyana, utilizing the 737 MAX 8. United’s Houston hub is particularly reliant on the 737 for service to Latin America, as the entire fleet is ETOPS-certified, unlike its Airbus A319, A320, and A321neo aircraft. You can learn more about ETOPS certification here.

United currently flies 123 Boeing 737 MAX 8s and 113 Boeing 737 MAX 9s, with outstanding orders for an additional 278 MAX aircraft, solidifying its position as the world’s largest customer for the 737 MAX 9 and 737 MAX 10. The airline configures its 737 MAX 8s with 166 seats, featuring a “Signature Interior” with seatback screens. Officials stated that the airline will continue to evaluate opportunities to deploy the 737 MAX on longer routes as demand and operational efficiencies allow, as reported in a recent Headlinez News report.
