The world’s largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, entered the Mediterranean Sea on Friday, February 20, 2026, as part of a significant U.S. Military buildup amid heightened tensions with Iran. The deployment was ordered by President Donald Trump.
Photographs taken from Gibraltar show the aircraft carrier passing through the Strait of Gibraltar, which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea.
The USS Gerald R. Ford will join the USS Abraham Lincoln and its accompanying warships already stationed in the Middle East. This move further expands the U.S. Military presence in the region.

On Friday, February 20, 2026, Trump indicated he was “considering” limited strikes against Iran should negotiations fail to yield an agreement.
The president had previously suggested on Thursday, February 19, 2026, that “bad things” would happen if Tehran did not reach a deal within 10 days, a timeframe he later extended to 15 days.
When asked by a reporter on Friday, February 20, 2026, if he was contemplating military action, Trump responded: “All I can say is – I’m considering it.”
This latest threat comes after Iranian foreign minister stated a draft proposal for a deal with Washington would be ready within days, following negotiations between the two sides in Geneva earlier this week.
Tehran has said both sides agreed to submit a potential agreement, which Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told U.S. Media would be “the next step.”
“I believe in two or three days it will be ready and after final confirmation from my superiors, it will be delivered to Steve Witkoff,” he said, referring to Trump’s chief negotiator for the Middle East.
