U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has adopted a markedly aggressive tone in discussing potential conflict with Iran, signaling a potential shift in the Biden administration’s approach to regional security. His rhetoric, characterized by a focus on overwhelming force, has drawn both attention and concern from international observers.
Few U.S. Defense Secretaries have spoken with the same level of aggression as Pete Hegseth, whose recent statements have raised eyebrows internationally. “This should never be a fair fight, and it isn’t. We hit them whereas they’re down, exactly as it should be,” he said during a press conference regarding recent U.S. Military strikes against Iran.
Referring to a sunk Iranian warship, Hegseth stated, “It thought it was safe in international waters. Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo. Silent death.” He added that there would be “no pardon and no mercy” for adversaries.
A war without mercy for the enemy is illegal. Even if merely rhetorical, Hegseth, an Iraq War veteran, appears to undervalue the rules of engagement. Prior to his time at the Pentagon, he criticized the allegedly “softened” “woke” military and “dumb deployment rules” that he claimed held back U.S. Soldiers in combat.
Unlike so many of our traditional allies who express outrage when it comes to the use of force, the U.S. Is unleashing the deadliest air campaign in history.
During Trump’s first term, Hegseth advised the president to pardon military personnel accused or convicted of war crimes. Hegseth likewise appeared to dismiss international concerns, stating the U.S. Was conducting “the deadliest air campaign in history” regardless of objections from “traditional allies” or “so-called international institutions.”
The White House’s approach to the conflict is also noteworthy, with official social media channels increasingly featuring videos of airstrikes, sometimes edited with scenes from video games, movies, and television shows.
Hegseth remained tight-lipped when asked about an attack on an Iranian girls’ school that Amnesty International reports killed 168 people, many of them children, likely caused by U.S. Cruise missiles. He stated he would await the results of an investigation.
Hegseth downplayed the Iranian blockade of the vital Strait of Hormuz, saying, “They are resorting to desperate measures. We are dealing with it. There is no need to worry.”
Doubts about Hegseth’s qualifications have been raised from the outset. However, the former Fox News host appears to offer what Trump values: a strong on-camera presence and a willingness to launch harsh attacks against media outlets critical of the war effort.
He dismissed reports that the Trump administration underestimated the consequences for the Strait of Hormuz as “obviously ridiculous.” The responsible U.S. Communications commission, led by a Trump loyalist, has already threatened television stations with the loss of their broadcasting license if they report in a way that is not in the public interest.
Prayer for Total Victory of His Warriors
Adding to the picture is Hegseth’s personal faith. He carefully combs his gray hair back, sporting a small U.S. Flag in his breast pocket. Less visible is the large cross tattooed on his chest and the Latin inscription on his arm: “Deus Vult” – “God wills it,” a phrase associated with the Crusades. A Christian nationalism appears to permeate his calls for the total victory of the warriors. “Total victory over those who endeavor to harm them.”
