Can American Women Return to the Podium After 20 Years?

The United States hasn’t won gold in the ladies’ singles figure skating event since Sarah Hughes’ victory at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. Hughes was fourth after the short program, a testament to her comeback performance. The last American to medal in the event was Sasha Cohen, who took silver at the 2006 Turin Games – a drought that feels like a lifetime for U.S. Figure skating fans.

Tonight, much of the hope rests on the shoulders of 20-year-ancient Alysa Liu, who currently sits in third place after the short program. Liu’s technically demanding routine features a triple loop-triple Lutz combination. She will skate her free program to music by Donna Summer – the same program that earned her a World Championship title in Boston in March 2025. Adding to her potential, Liu brings a relaxed attitude to the ice, a valuable asset under pressure, especially after returning to competition in 2025 following a brief retirement announcement at age 16. She already contributed to a Team USA victory in the team event here in Milan.

Amber Glenn, 26, is also one to watch, skating in the second group. Her short program was strong until a missed triple loop dropped her to 13th place. Glenn is known for her powerful skating and includes a triple Axel in her repertoire. She has the potential to deliver a spectacular free skate. Notably, Madonna even sent Glenn a personal video message congratulating her on her performance to Like a Prayer.

Isabeau Levito, 18, will also be looking to improve on a disappointing short program. Judges determined her triple loop was slightly short of a full rotation. Skating to Cinema Paradiso, Levito is recognized for her grace and well-choreographed routines.
