Are they at war, or aren’t they? The U.S. Senate rejected a resolution on Wednesday, March 4, by a vote of 47 to 53, that would have limited President Donald Trump’s authority to conduct military operations against Iran without congressional approval.
Had the resolution passed – requiring just three more votes – it would have forced an end to U.S. Military strikes against Iran. The resolution would also have required any future military campaigns to avoid bypassing Congress.
Democratic Senator Chris Murphy argued before the Senate vote that the resolution was necessary to prevent Trump from repeating the mistakes of previous U.S. Presidents in Afghanistan and Libya.
“The difference between Democrats and Republicans is that Republicans haven’t learned anything. Decades of American arrogance in the Middle East, believing that American troops, American planes, American weapons, and American bombs could fundamentally change reality in a faraway country,” Murphy said.
