Infrastructure in Iranian cities of Isfahan and Jorramchar has been targeted in attacks reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel, according to Iranian state media. The strikes represent a significant escalation in tensions between Iran and the two countries, and come amid heightened concerns over the stability of global energy markets.
Reports indicate damage to the gas administration building and a gas pressure reducing station in Isfahan, a city in central Iran, as well as to nearby residential areas. A gas pipeline connected to the Jorramchar power plant in western Iran was reportedly attacked.
These attacks follow a warning issued by U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday, February 22, 2026, giving Tehran a 48-hour deadline to unblock the Strait of Hormuz, threatening to destroy Iranian energy facilities if the demand was not met.
Alleged Aggression Against Iran
Early Saturday, February 28, 2026, Israel and the United States initiated what has been described as a joint attack against Iran, with the stated goal of “eliminating threats” posed by the Islamic Republic.
According to reports, the attacks resulted in the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and several high-ranking military officials. Those killed included Ali Larijani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council; Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of the Basij militia; and Esmaeil Khatib, the Minister of Intelligence. Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the deceased Supreme Leader, has been named as his successor.
Iranian authorities report that more than 1,300 civilians have been killed and over 18,000 injured since the start of hostilities. Thousands of civilian infrastructures, homes, medical centers, and schools have also been reportedly destroyed or severely damaged.
In response to the attacks, Tehran has launched multiple waves of ballistic missiles and drones targeting Israel, and U.S. Bases in the Middle East. As a reaction to attacks on its energy infrastructure, the Islamic Republic conducted a series of attacks targeting “oil facilities linked to the United States” in several countries across the region.
Iran has also reportedly almost completely blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil and gas is transported, causing a surge in fuel prices.
