US Special Operations Forces Rescue Downed F-15E Officer in Daring Iran Mission
In a high-stakes operation conducted between April 3 and April 5, 2026, United States special operations forces successfully rescued a downed F-15E crew member from deep within Iranian territory. The mission, which involved a coordinated effort between SEAL Team Six, the CIA and the U.S. Air Force, culminated in the recovery of a seriously injured weapons systems officer (WSO) after a two-day race against Iranian forces.
The rescued airman, a USAF colonel, had been shot down on Good Friday in southwestern Iran. According to reports, the officer managed to evade capture for 36 hours by climbing a 7,000-foot ridge in the Zagros Mountains, relying on a single handgun for defense. While the colonel remained in hiding, MQ-9 Reaper drones provided critical cover, striking nearby Iranian forces with missiles to prevent them from closing in on his position.
To facilitate the extraction, the CIA executed a complex diversion on Saturday, April 4, planting fake intelligence to mislead the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The ruse suggested that the officer had already been rescued and was being transported out of the country, a tactic designed to confuse Iranian forces who had placed a $60,000 bounty on the colonel’s head.
The rescue operation required the establishment of a hastily constructed forward air strip in hostile territory, located approximately 200 miles inside Iran, south of the city of Isfahan. SEAL Team Six operators eventually located the colonel and extracted him following an intense firefight with local militias and IRGC members. While both crew members of the original F-15E flight were reportedly rescued, the WSO sustained injuries during the ordeal.
The operation resulted in significant equipment losses for the United States. U.S. Forces self-destroyed two C-130 Hercules transport aircraft and four MH-6 or AH-6 special operations helicopters to prevent them from falling into enemy hands. One A-10 Thunderbolt II was destroyed by Iranian forces, and two Black Hawk helicopters were damaged. On the Iranian side, three IRGC members were killed during the engagement.
