A Georgia jury on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, found Colin Gray guilty of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in connection with a 2024 high school shooting carried out by his son. The landmark case raises complex questions about parental responsibility for the violent acts of their children and could set a precedent for future legal challenges.

Gray, 55, faced multiple charges, including second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment, and cruelty to children. The jury convicted him on 27 counts, with two charges ultimately dropped, after deliberating for less than two hours. He now faces a significant prison sentence, potentially ranging from 10 to 30 years for each murder charge and 1 to 10 years for each manslaughter charge.

The charges stem from the September 4, 2024, shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, where Gray’s son, Colt Gray, allegedly killed two students and two teachers, and injured eight others. Prosecutors argued that Colin Gray enabled the attack by gifting his son an AR-15-style rifle as a Christmas present and allowing him access to ammunition, despite being aware of potential risks.

“That man and his son are both responsible for the immense suffering that occurred on September 4,” prosecutor Patricia Brooks stated in closing arguments. The defense countered that Gray was unaware of his son’s violent intentions and had sought help for his mental health struggles.

This conviction marks the first time in the United States a parent has been found guilty of murder related to the actions of their child in a mass shooting. The outcome follows similar cases involving the parents of other school shooters, including the 2024 convictions of Jennifer and James Crumbley in Michigan, who were charged with involuntary manslaughter. The case is part of a growing trend of holding parents criminally liable for failing to prevent their children’s violent acts.

Colt Gray, now 16, has been charged as an adult with felony murder and aggravated assault and is awaiting a separate trial. The conviction of Colin Gray underscores the increasing scrutiny of gun ownership and parental responsibility in the wake of numerous school shootings across the country. Details of the trial and verdict have drawn national attention.
