A fire aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, has left hundreds of sailors without sleeping quarters and prompted questions about the ship’s operational readiness. The incident comes as the U.S. Military presence in the Middle East remains heightened amid ongoing tensions with Iran.

According to early reports, the fire broke out in the ship’s laundry area on Monday, March 16, 2026, and spread to nearby berthing spaces. While the U.S. Military stated the blaze was not caused by enemy action, approximately 200 crew members were evaluated for smoke inhalation, with some sustaining injuries.

Plumbing Issues Plague the Flagship

The incident adds to a series of challenges facing the $13 billion vessel. American media have reported ongoing construction defects resulting in frequent plumbing issues and long wait times for toilet access. These issues have led to clogged drains and extensive queues for restroom facilities.

The USS Gerald R. Ford, commissioned in 2017 during the first term of President Trump, is powered by two nuclear reactors and measures over 335 meters in length and 75 meters in width. Capable of speeds of approximately 55 kilometers per hour, the carrier typically deploys with dozens of aircraft and an escort of destroyers. Its crew consists of more than 4,000 sailors, and it has a displacement of 100,000 tons when fully loaded.

The carrier had been operating in the Red Sea. According to sources, the USS Gerald Ford is currently docked at either a naval base in Crete or another European port. The withdrawal of the Ford would leave the U.S. Fifth Fleet, responsible for the Middle East, with only one aircraft carrier to support military operations against Iran. The USS George H.W. Bush is reportedly preparing for deployment to the region.

The U.S. Has significantly increased its military presence in the Middle East as it seeks concessions from Iran regarding its nuclear program. Washington has built up its biggest military presence in the Middle East in decades, according to reports. The countries are scheduled to hold their next round of nuclear talks on Thursday in Geneva.
