V-Color has launched novel “1+1 Value Pack” DDR5 memory kits that pair a single functional DDR5 module with a non-operational, illuminated filler module. The kits are designed to offer a visually complete system appearance without requiring the purchase of two full-capacity memory sticks, a strategy responding to current market conditions.
The secondary module doesn’t store data or improve system performance; its sole function is to activate its RGB lighting, creating the illusion of a fully populated dual-channel system. This is purely an aesthetic choice, allowing users to achieve a high-end look for their PC without incurring the full cost of a second RAM unit.
Aesthetics Versus Performance
The company notes that these kits are currently available in 16 GB and 24 GB configurations. Purchasing one of these kits will fill two memory slots on a motherboard, but only one will contain functional memory. Purchasing two identical kits could fill all four slots, creating the appearance of a high-end, illuminated system, though only two modules would be actively working.
This approach comes as DDR5 memory prices remain high, impacting PC builders who are assembling systems incrementally. As Overclock 3D reports, V-Color’s offering allows consumers to purchase the minimum necessary components to get a system running, with the option to add more genuine memory later.
However, using a single real module means sacrificing the benefits of “dual-channel” technology, which enables faster data transfer between the memory and the processor. Despite this, the performance loss may be acceptable for basic tasks or less demanding games in exchange for immediate cost savings.
A Market Offering “Fake” Memory
According to reporting from Overclock 3D, it’s unusual for manufacturers to sell plastic components with lights to compensate for a lack of real hardware, but the current market context explains the situation. The surge in demand for memory chips driven by the rise of Artificial Intelligence has led to consistently high prices. Until production improves or the AI boom subsides, RAM will remain a luxury item.
V-Color is likely not the only company to adopt this tactic; it’s a direct response to challenging times where budget constraints are paramount. V-Color hasn’t skimped on details for those concerned with aesthetics. Its Manta XSky and XFinity models include patented technology to ensure the lights on the real and “fake” memory modules synchronize perfectly. There will be no visual difference between the two while the PC is powered on.
