Valerie Perrine, celebrated for her roles in the “Superman” films and her Academy Award-nominated performance in “Lenny,” died Monday at her home in Beverly Hills. She was 82 years old.

Levde med Parkinson

The actress was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2015, a progressive disorder that affects movement.

Souther noted that Perrine faced the illness with incredible courage and never complained.

“She was a true inspiration who lived life to the fullest—and what a magnificent life it was. The world feels less elegant without her in it,” Souther said.

Souther also asked for support for a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs of Perrine’s funeral.

“After her battle with Parkinson’s disease, her finances are severely depleted,” Souther wrote in the post.

The GoFundMe description explained, “As roles became fewer, the financial security that should have come with a lifetime dedicated to an extraordinary career disappeared. Valerie used what she had on medical treatments, determined to fight.”

Perrine first gained widespread recognition with her role in the 1974 film “Lenny,” earning a BAFTA Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. The film received a total of six Oscar nominations.

Her Oscar nomination was groundbreaking; she was the first actress nominated for an Academy Award for a role featuring full frontal nudity.

She is perhaps best remembered for her portrayal of Miss Teschmacher, Lex Luthor’s loyal assistant, in the “Superman” films of the 1970s and early 1980s.

Later in her career, Perrine received acclaim for her supporting role in Nancy Meyers’ 2000 hit “What Women Want,” which grossed $374 million worldwide and became one of the most successful romantic comedies of its time.
