A young woman was killed Thursday morning after being struck by a bus in Valparaíso, chile, prompting an examination by local authorities. The victim, identified as a student at the University of Valparaíso, was crossing at a marked crosswalk when she was hit by a bus traveling toward Quintero, according to reports. She was on her way to take an exam at the university’s Faculty of Sciences at the time of the accident.
Authorities have detained the bus driver as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Major Víctor Torres, of the First South Police Precinct, stated that officers responded to the scene to investigate a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. “Personnel from Carabineros had to attend to verify a traffic accident involving a pedestrian, where at the scene of the incident, the existence of a female adult was evident. Based on information gathered at the scene, as well as witness accounts, it appears the pedestrian was crossing the roadway at a safety crossing and the public transportation minibus was making a turn.”
Torres continued, “Without realizing the pedestrian crossing in time, it struck her, and as a result, she fell to the ground and was run over by the rear of the vehicle.”
The woman died at the scene due to the severity of her injuries. “With this information, Carabineros personnel informed the Public Prosecutor’s Office, who ordered personnel from the Traffic Accident Investigation Section to examine the scene and subsequently deliver all conclusions to establish what occurred in this unfortunate situation,” Torres concluded.
