Valve is facing an unexpected challenge as it prepares to launch its new line of Steam Machines in 2026: a global shortage of memory components driven by the increasing demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure.

During a presentation at GDC 2026, Valve representatives confirmed the company still intends to release the devices this year, but acknowledged securing sufficient RAM has become a significant hurdle. The presentation was led by Kaci Aitchison Boyle and Tom Giardino, who discussed the difficulties caused by the current hardware market landscape. The new Steam Machines represent Valve’s latest effort to expand its presence in the PC gaming market, building on the success of the Steam Deck.

PC Gamer reported a moment from the presentation where Valve jokingly commented on the situation: “If anyone has access to a large stock of RAM, we are in the market and would like to buy it.

The problem stems primarily from the enormous demand for memory chips generated by AI companies and large data centers. With substantial volumes of RAM already reserved for ongoing infrastructure projects, hardware manufacturers across the industry are grappling with limited supply and rising costs. This shortage underscores the growing impact of the AI boom on the broader technology supply chain.

For Valve, this scarcity directly affects its ability to assemble and ship the new Steam Machines. The company indicated that obtaining components will be a decisive factor in determining both the availability and launch timeline of the devices. Beyond production challenges, the increase in memory costs is also expected to impact the final price of the systems.
