Venezuela has claimed its first-ever World Baseball Classic title, defeating the United States 3-2 in a thrilling final held on March 18th at LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida. The victory marks a historic moment for Venezuelan baseball and caps off a remarkable tournament run.

The game, dubbed the “Maduro Derby” due to recent political tensions between the two nations, saw Venezuela overcome a strong American side. The win is particularly significant given the recent political conflict between the countries, stemming from the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by U.S. Authorities earlier this year.

Venezuela’s starting pitcher, Rodriguez, delivered a stellar performance, pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings. A solo home run by Abreu tied the game in the 8th inning, but it was Eugenio Suarez’s RBI single in the 9th that ultimately secured the championship for Venezuela.

The United States, aiming for back-to-back WBC titles, fell short despite a late rally. This represents the second consecutive runner-up finish for the Americans in the tournament.

Venezuela had previously reached the semi-finals in 2009, but this marks their first appearance in the championship game and their first WBC title. They upset defending champions Japan 8-5 in the tournament’s quarterfinal round, signaling their championship potential. The win extends Venezuela’s impressive run through the tournament and establishes them as a force in international baseball.

According to Chosun.com, the Venezuelan team celebrated wildly after the final out, marking a momentous occasion for the nation. Newsis reported that the game was a hard-fought battle, with both teams displaying exceptional skill, and determination. The Maeil Business Newspaper highlighted the symbolic weight of the victory, given the recent political climate.
