Ventspils Spars Finish Fourth at Latvian Women’s Basketball League 2 Division Final Four
The Ventspils Spars women’s basketball team concluded their run at the Latvian Women’s Basketball League 2 Division “Final Four” tournament in Jelgava with a fourth-place finish this past weekend. The tournament showcased the top teams in the second tier of Latvian women’s basketball, culminating in a thrilling competition for the championship.
In the semifinal matchup on March 7, Ventspils faced off against Jūrmala and fell with a final score of 57-68.
The bronze medal game proved to be a dramatic contest, as RSU-2 edged out Ventspils Spars 51-54 to secure third place. Despite leading for much of the game, Ventspils struggled to build a significant advantage, and the outcome remained in doubt until the final moments. With approximately three minutes remaining, Ventspils Spars had established a four-point lead (51-47), but RSU’s offense responded with the game’s final points.
Martina Bertāne led the Ventspils team in scoring with 17 points, even as Katrīna Pētersone added 13. Annija Zvirgzdiņa contributed 12 points and a team-high 8 rebounds, and Ulla Ērkšķe finished with 11 points.
Annija Zvirgzdiņa was recognized as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the Ventspils Spars team throughout the “Final Four” tournament. Her consistent performance and all-around contributions were key for her team.
This season’s Latvian Women’s Basketball League 2 Division championship featured eight Latvian teams and one from Estonia, Audentes. RSU-2 claimed the championship title in 2023, while Ventspils Spars had previously enjoyed success, winning the tournament in both 2024 and 2025.
Congratulations to the Spars basketball players on their fourth-place finish!
