The sighting aligns with a broader trend across Northern Vidzeme, where residents in the Rūjiena, Mazsalaca, and Valka regions have reported more frequent encounters with brown bears. This shift in wildlife patterns has prompted community action to better understand and manage the animals’ presence near human settlements.

To track these movements, a public interest group called “Lāču izplatība Latvijā” was established on Facebook. The group serves as a crowdsourced map to identify regions where bears have been seen or where they have caused damage. Organizers emphasize that because brown bears are protected species, the goal is to teach the public how to coexist with them safely.

The initiative focuses on educating residents—many of whom have lived for generations without encountering such large predators—on how to minimize bear interest in gardens and residential farms. This effort underscores the necessity of public awareness as the brown bear population expands its footprint within the country.
