Four construction workers died Tuesday in a collapse at a building site in Vienna’s Alsergrund district, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred in the afternoon at a construction site within the courtyard of an older building on Porzellangasse, near Bauernfeldplatz. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, an area known for its bustling atmosphere, proximity to the Lycée français de Vienne and frequent public transportation. The tragedy underscores the inherent risks associated with construction work in urban environments.
Initial reports from police were limited, indicating a collapsed scaffold and injuries. As emergency crews arrived, the area was quickly cordoned off, impacting traffic on Liechtensteinstraße, Thurngasse, Porzellangasse, Grünentorgasse, and Bauernfeldplatz. Traffic, both public and private, came to a standstill as police, fire, and rescue vehicles converged on the scene, attracting onlookers.
Extent of the Tragedy Revealed in the Evening
Authorities initially reported one worker, a 45-year-old man, was seriously injured. Early media reports suggested the possibility of additional casualties, even fatalities, but official confirmation was delayed. By early evening, the full scope of the disaster became clear: four workers had been recovered deceased.
According to preliminary findings, a supporting structure gave way. The workers were buried under debris consisting of scaffold parts, formwork elements, iron supports, and wet concrete. Fire officials explained that the workers had been attempting to concrete arches or balconies, having erected a scaffold and formwork for the task. The collapse occurred during the concrete pouring process, a spokesperson said.
Difficult Recovery Operation
When emergency responders arrived, the victims were already trapped beneath a mass of rubble and concrete. The recovery operation proved challenging, requiring painstaking manual labor. Crews had to repeatedly remove still-liquid concrete. A tower crane on site provided assistance. Two victims were initially recovered, followed by the remaining fatalities after additional debris was cleared. Approximately 30 vehicles, 120 emergency personnel, and specialized equipment, including rescue dogs, were deployed to the scene.
Investigation Underway
Police spokesperson Philipp Haßlinger stated Wednesday morning that the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation. Authorities are working closely with the labor inspectorate, and a report has been submitted to the public prosecutor’s office, which will determine if negligence played a role. Initial questioning of witnesses took place during the operation, with further interviews planned.
