Volkswagen Refines EV Strategy with MEB+ Platform

Volkswagen is recalibrating its approach to electric vehicles, moving beyond early models designed to accommodate internal combustion engines to a dedicated EV platform. The company first introduced the MEB platform in 2019 with the ID.3, a vehicle that signaled a clear departure from traditional automotive design. Initially, brands within the Volkswagen Group, including Škoda and Cupra, offered variations of the ID. Models.

Volkswagen initially faced challenges in achieving the widespread success it anticipated with the early ID. Models. The company is now focused on refining its strategy and introducing new models that appeal to a broader customer base. This shift includes a renewed emphasis on the brand’s core identity, mirroring a successful approach taken by Renault with its retro-inspired electric vehicles, as demonstrated by their positive reception.

A Shift in Direction

A key element of this reform led to a visit to Amsterdam to test drive the upcoming ID.Cross, a vehicle Volkswagen anticipates will be a significant contributor to its EV sales. The ID.Cross is positioned as an affordable, stylish, and practical electric crossover. The company is currently testing pre-production models, with a full reveal expected soon.

Volkswagen Group is preparing a broader offensive in this segment, with the ID.Cross serving as a foundation for other upcoming models, including the ID.Polo, Cupra Raval, and Skoda Epiq. All three vehicles will be built on the MEB+ (or MEB Entry) platform, representing a significant departure from previous ID. Models. A key change is the shift to front-wheel drive, abandoning the previously favored rear-wheel-drive configuration.

This decision was justified by improved charging efficiency and weight distribution. The ID.Cross measures 4.15 meters in length with a 2.6-meter wheelbase, providing ample space for passengers. The rear seats comfortably accommodate adults, as confirmed during testing. Cargo capacity is also substantial, offering 475 liters of space that expands to 1340 liters with the rear seats folded down.

Performance and Specifications

The ID.Cross will be available with two battery options: a 37 kWh version and a larger 52 kWh pack. While official WLTP range figures are pending, estimates suggest a range of 312 kilometers for the smaller battery and 436 kilometers for the larger one. The base model is expected to start around €28,000 (approximately $30,000 USD), positioning it as an accessible entry point into the EV market.

Despite the opportunity to drive the ID.Cross, the exterior remained concealed under camouflage. However, based on the previously unveiled ID.Cross Concept, the production model is expected to closely resemble the concept vehicle. The ID.Cross exhibits a distinctly Volkswagen aesthetic: its design is simple, well-proportioned, and avoids being overly futuristic.

The driving experience was impressive. As is typical for Volkswagen, the ID.Cross offers precise handling, stability, and responsive steering. It also exhibited a surprisingly comfortable ride quality due to its generous suspension travel.

While the advanced driver-assistance systems were functional, they were still in a beta testing phase. The “retro mode,” however, was fully operational, offering a playful feature that mimics the instrument panels of classic Volkswagen models.

Availability and Pricing

Volkswagen has revealed most of the key technical specifications for the ID.Cross. The official unveiling is scheduled for May 2026, with the ID.Polo to be revealed first. The ID.Cross is expected to follow in July, with initial deliveries planned for late November. The company aims to offer the ID.Cross at a competitive price point, with a starting price of around €28,000 (approximately $30,000 USD).
