Stage two of the Volta a Catalunya 2026 between Figueres and Banyoles is set for Tuesday, featuring a 167.4-kilometer course primed for a sprint finish, though a challenging third-category climb in the final stretch could shake things up. Fans can catch all the action live on Teledeporte and RTVE Play starting at 3:15 PM.

Following Dorian Godon’s sprint victory over Remco Evenepoel in the first stage concluding in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, the race moves into its second day with a largely flat profile suggesting another mass sprint at the finish in Banyoles.

Stage 2 of the Volta a Catalunya 2026: Profile and Route

The second stage of the Volta 2026 covers 167.4 km, but riders will face a third-category climb that, while unlikely to disrupt a predicted mass sprint, could serve as a springboard for breakaway attempts.

This stage traverses the regions of Alt Empordà, Garrotxa, and Pla de l’Estany, presenting a deceptively challenging terrain. The peloton will navigate mostly flat ground during the first half of the stage, creating ideal conditions for a breakaway to establish itself. The first intermediate sprint is located in Peralada (km 60.5), an early opportunity for contenders for the points classification to accumulate points.

The Alt de Santa Pau (3rd Category) represents the main climbing challenge of the day. Despite being a third-category climb, its placement in the latter part of the stage (the feed zone ends at km 136.5, exceptionally close to the ascent) could help to thin the peloton or inspire attacks aimed at preventing a bunch sprint. The finish in Banyoles (Passeig de Mossèn Lluís Constans) is technically demanding. The finishing straight is approximately 500 meters long with a slight uphill gradient, but it’s preceded by a 90-degree turn, requiring sprint trains to position themselves perfectly to avoid losing momentum in the final half-kilometer.

this stage favors pure sprinters with strong teams to control attacks on the Alt de Santa Pau, or a powerful finisher who can capitalize on the 1-2% positive gradient at the finish. The wind is also a factor to watch: riding through Empordà, the tramontana wind can cause echelons before entering the more sheltered area of the Garrotxa.
