Volvo Recall: 40,300 EVs Face Fire Risk

Volvo Cars is recalling over 30,000 electric vehicles globally due to concerns over potential fire risks, the company announced on February 5, 2026. The recall impacts the EX30 model, Volvo’s compact SUV, which was widely launched in 2023.

The action follows reports of overheating batteries and a recent incident in Hong Kong where an EX30 caught fire, with explosions reported at the scene. According to reports, the fire resulted in the evacuation of residents from a nearby building, though no injuries were sustained.

Volvo has identified a potential for short circuits within the battery, particularly during charging, as the cause of the issue. As a precautionary measure, the automaker is advising affected customers to limit charging to 70 percent and avoid parking the vehicle near structures while charging.

Currently, Swedish customers are not affected by the recall. Volvo has not yet disclosed a comprehensive list of all countries included in the recall, but Hong Kong is among those identified in media reports.

The recall underscores the ongoing scrutiny of electric vehicle battery safety as automakers ramp up production and sales of EVs worldwide. Volvo has not yet provided detailed commentary on the incident, but is proceeding with the recall of over 30,000 vehicles as a preventative measure.
