Two firefighters have died in the line of duty after a devastating fire broke out at a seafood processing plant’s cold storage facility in Wando County, South Jeolla Province. The tragedy, which occurred on the morning of April 12, 2026, underscores the extreme risks emergency responders face when battling rapid-onset industrial fires.

The blaze began around 8:25 a.m. In Gunoe-myeon, Wando. According to reports, the fire spread with extreme speed, leading to a suspected flashover explosion that trapped the responders. The victims include a 44-year-old Fire Lieutenant from the Wando Fire Station and a 30-year-old Firefighter from a local unit of the Haenam Fire Station.

The loss has resonated deeply within the community, as both men were described as dedicated public servants with young families or bright futures ahead. The 30-year-old firefighter, who joined the service in 2022, was a “multitasking” responder who handled everything from ambulance driving to fire suppression due to staffing shortages. He was also an engaged man scheduled to be married in October. The 44-year-old lieutenant is survived by his wife and three children.

Prime Minister Kim Min-seok visited a funeral home in Wando-eup on April 13, 2026, to express the government’s condolences. During the visit, the Prime Minister presented an Order of Service Merit (Okjo Geunjeong Medal) to one of the fallen firefighters, promising that the state would ensure they are honored with the highest level of respect.

A joint altar has been established at the Wando Arts Center, where local residents, students, and military personnel have gathered to pay their respects. The grief-stricken community has seen students and colleagues weep over the loss of a father and a peer.

Provincial authorities are pursuing special promotions and medals for both responders, and they will be interred at the National Cemetery. A formal farewell ceremony is scheduled for April 14, 2026.

The incident highlights the critical danger of flashovers in enclosed industrial spaces, where temperatures can rise instantaneously, leaving responders with little time to escape.

Photos of the condolences for the fallen firefighters are available via government briefings.

Colleagues remembered the fallen as “reliable” and “diligent,” with one coworker noting that the 30-year-old had commuted long distances to serve in Haenam despite having no family ties to the area, driven by a lifelong dream of wearing the firefighter’s uniform.

The tragic loss of the father of three and the groom-to-be has left the region in mourning as the community prepares for the final services.

The heartbreaking atmosphere at the wake reflects the deep bond between the firefighters and the citizens of Wando.
