WBC: USA’s Fate Rests on Italy vs. Mexico Game

HOUSTON – The United States assembled its strongest roster yet for this World Baseball Classic, but their fate now rests on the performances of Italy and Mexico.

“It’s out of our control,” said Team USA captain Aaron Judge. “Now we just demand a little luck, and we’ll see what happens.”

Following a stunning upset by Italy against the heavily favored American team with an 8-6 victory Tuesday night at Daikin Park, all eyes turn to Wednesday’s 7 p.m. ET matchup between Italy and Mexico (watch on Tubi). Multiple scenarios remain in play for the final spots in Group B.

If Italy defeats Mexico, Italy (4-0 in group play) will win Group B, and the United States (3-1) will finish second. Both Italy and the United States would then advance to the quarterfinals.

Though, if Mexico defeats Italy, all three teams – Mexico, Italy, and the United States – will be tied at 3-1. In that scenario, Mexico would advance, but a mathematical tiebreaker would be needed to determine whether Italy or the United States moves on.

Teams tied in the standings will be ranked based on runs allowed divided by defensive outs recorded in games between the tied teams.

Should that also result in a tie, the next tiebreaker is earned runs allowed divided by defensive outs recorded in games between the three teams.

Here are the relevant statistics heading into Wednesday’s games, with the United States having completed its four scheduled contests:

Because Mexico has allowed fewer runs than Italy, there is no scenario in which Mexico can lose Wednesday’s game and fail to advance.

Assuming a nine-inning game, the U.S. Will advance if Italy allows five or more runs and loses. But Italy will advance if it loses while allowing four runs or fewer.

Extra innings, of course, would alter the equation.

Regardless of the outcome, Team USA will not have a relaxing day off. The team will gather at their Houston hotel to watch the Mexico-Italy clash, and the final score will determine whether they will be meeting again in the tournament.

HOUSTON – A shocking result at the World Baseball Classic has thrown Team USA’s tournament hopes into uncertainty. After Italy’s stunning 8-6 victory over the Americans on Tuesday, the United States now needs a specific outcome from Wednesday’s game between Italy and Mexico to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.

“It’s out of our control,” a visibly frustrated Team USA captain Aaron Judge told reporters. “Now we just need a little luck, and we’ll see what happens.”

The Americans, widely considered a favorite in the tournament, now identify themselves in a precarious position. All eyes will be on the 7 p.m. ET matchup between Italy and Mexico (available to stream on Tubi), as the result will dictate the Group B standings and which teams advance.

A win for Italy would secure their place atop Group B with a perfect 4-0 record, sending the United States through as the second-place team at 3-1. However, a Mexico victory would create a three-way tie at 3-1, with Mexico advancing and a complex tiebreaker scenario determining whether Italy or the United States will join them in the quarterfinals.

The tiebreaker will first consider runs allowed divided by defensive outs recorded in games played between the tied teams. If that doesn’t resolve the tie, the next criteria is earned runs allowed divided by defensive outs recorded in those same games.

Currently, Mexico has allowed fewer runs than Italy, meaning a Mexican win automatically sends them through to the next round. The United States will advance if Italy loses and allows five or more runs. Conversely, Italy will advance with a loss, provided they keep the American offense to four runs or fewer. Extra innings could, of course, dramatically change the calculations.

Regardless of the outcome on the field, Team USA will be watching closely from their Houston hotel. The final score of the Italy-Mexico game will determine whether their World Baseball Classic journey continues.
