Mamuju (ANTARA) – Health officials in West Sulawesi Province are intensifying efforts to prevent a measles outbreak in Pasangkayu Regency through epidemiological investigations. This proactive measure comes as several regions across Indonesia have reported a potential increase in measles cases at the beginning of 2026, highlighting the importance of vigilant public health monitoring.
“This activity is part of an effort to improve early detection through strengthening health surveillance systems and a rapid response to potential Extraordinary Events (KLB) of measles,” said Dr. Nursyamsi Rahim, Head of the Health, Population Control and Family Planning Office (Dinkes P2KB) of West Sulawesi Province, on Sunday.
The provincial government is committed to strengthening basic quality health services, including improved health surveillance, as a strategic step to protect future generations from vaccine-preventable diseases, particularly measles. Effective surveillance is crucial for controlling infectious disease spread and protecting vulnerable populations.
Dr. Nursyamsi emphasized that the ongoing investigations are not simply administrative monitoring, but a strategic forum for aligning perceptions, identifying challenges in the field, and anticipating potential cases of vaccine-preventable diseases due to low immunization coverage.
Measles is a highly contagious disease, requiring high vigilance and a rapid response from all health workers and stakeholders in the region, he added. Coordinated efforts between provincial and regency governments are essential for a successful public health response.
Dr. Nursyamsi expressed hope that the increased collaboration will strengthen coordination between the provincial and regency governments, and ultimately improve the quality of public health services.
“With a shared commitment, the strengthening of surveillance and prevention efforts are expected to have a real impact on improving the health of the people of West Sulawesi Province,” Dr. Nursyamsi stated.
Health officials are also urging the public to ensure their children are fully immunized at the nearest community health center or clinic, as vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent measles transmission and its potential complications.
