Los Angeles City, County, and Federal Offices Closed for Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Columbus Day
Los Angeles city, county, and federal government offices are closed today, October 11, 2025, for Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Columbus Day, impacting services for residents across the region.
The city and county of Los Angeles officially observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day annually on the second Monday of October, a change made in 2018 following votes by the City Council and L.A. County Board of Supervisors to replace Columbus Day. However, the federal government has designated today as Columbus Day, resulting in the closure of federal offices and courts. California state criminal and civil courts will remain open on limited schedules, and schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District will also continue operations.
Regular mail delivery is suspended today by the U.S. Postal Service, and post offices are closed. Public transportation, including buses, rail services, and Metrolink trains in Los Angeles, will operate on their regular schedules. Several events are planned to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, including performances at The Getty Center, a community event at Tuxuunga, a lesson in local tribal history at San Dimas Canyon Nature Center, and events hosted by the Indigenous Fashion Collective at the Autry Museum of the American West. Cal State L.A. is also hosting a celebration on campus.
The shift towards recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day reflects a growing national movement to acknowledge the history and contributions of Native Americans, and to move away from celebrating a figure whose arrival in the Americas initiated a period of colonization and hardship for Indigenous populations. Officials encourage residents to participate in the planned events and learn more about Indigenous cultures.
