WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will automatically delete messages once they have been read, enhancing privacy for users of the messaging app. The update, first reported by WABetainfo, reflects a broader trend in secure communication as users become increasingly aware of data privacy.
Currently, WhatsApp’s disappearing message feature allows users to set messages to vanish after 24 hours, seven days, or 90 days. The platform also offers options for sending photos and videos that can only be viewed once. This new functionality expands on those existing privacy tools.
According to the reports, the new setting will give users the option to have messages deleted 15 minutes after they are read. If a message isn’t read, it will disappear after 24 hours. The feature is currently in development within the Android beta app (version 2.26.12.2) and is expected to be rolled out to all users in a future update.
The addition of read-receipt-based message deletion builds on WhatsApp’s existing temporary message options, giving users more control over their digital footprint within the app. The company stated that the goal is to provide increased privacy in conversations.
This development comes as messaging platforms continue to prioritize user privacy and data security in response to growing consumer demand and regulatory scrutiny.
