WhatsApp is developing a fresh feature that will allow users to hide portions of messages using a “spoiler” tool. The functionality was identified by WABetaInfo in version 2.26.7.10 of the messaging app, currently available on the Google Play Store.

The feature is designed to function as a new text formatting option, similar to existing styles like bold, italics, strikethrough, and monospace. The intention is to allow users to conceal only a specific part of a message, rather than the entire text.

To utilize the tool, users will select the desired text within the typing bar and access the formatting menu. There, a “spoiler” option will appear. Activating it will automatically add two vertical bars before and after the selected text.

Once sent, the message will appear obscured in the chat, with an effect that prevents immediate reading of the content. To view the hidden text, users will need to tap on the message bubble, revealing the concealed portion.

An Alternative to View Once Messages

WhatsApp already offers an option to send images and audio in “view once” mode. Though, this solution has limitations: once opened, the message disappears and cannot be revisited in the chat.

The new spoiler system aims to address this limitation by allowing content to remain available in the chat history, but hidden until someone chooses to view it. This feature adds another layer of control over message visibility, catering to different user preferences.

Initially, the functionality will support only text messages. The possibility of extending the feature to photos and other content types may be considered in future updates.

The tool is currently in development and undergoing internal adjustments. The expectation is that, after testing is complete, it will be gradually released to users in a future app update. An official launch date has not yet been announced.
