WhatsApp is bolstering account security with a modern feature that will allow users to protect their accounts with a password ranging from 6 to 20 characters. The update, expected to roll out in upcoming releases of the Meta-owned messaging app, adds another layer of protection against unauthorized access.
The new functionality was first reported by WABetaInfo and is currently available in the 2.26.7.8 beta version of WhatsApp for Android, accessible through the Google Play Beta Program. This development underscores the platform’s commitment to reinforcing account security and preventing fraudulent activity and account takeovers.
Currently, WhatsApp offers two-step verification, which adds a secondary security code after the six-digit verification code sent to a user’s phone. The addition of a dedicated account password is intended to provide an extra layer of security, working in conjunction with existing measures to make account breaches more difficult.
What Will the New WhatsApp Password Entail?
According to information from the beta version, the WhatsApp password will be an alphanumeric string that users can configure directly within the app’s settings. The password will be subject to specific requirements:
- It must be between 6 and 20 characters
- It must include at least one letter
- It must contain at least one number
The application will indicate whether the chosen password meets the security criteria.
How Will the Password Work During Login?
With this new feature, WhatsApp will request the account password after a user enters the six-digit verification code during login.
If a user likewise has two-step verification enabled, the process will unfold as follows:
- Enter the six-digit verification code
- Enter the two-step verification code
- Type in the new account password
Why Is a New Password Necessary?
This update aims to prevent unauthorized access to accounts, even if someone obtains the verification code through methods like SIM swapping or a potential device hack. The account password in WhatsApp will function as an additional measure to reduce the risk of account theft.
The tool will be optional, allowing each user to decide whether to activate the new security layer, according to reports from WABetaInfo. Users who choose to enable it will be able to update or delete the password at any time, providing greater control over account protection.
The feature is currently in development and is expected to arrive in a future WhatsApp update following testing in the beta version. It remains unknown whether this password feature will be extended to iOS systems in future updates.
