Wine isn’t a vehicle for quick profits – it requires patience, an understanding of the market, costs and many other factors, wine industry professional Madara Kapzema revealed in an interview with Investoru Klubs.

Please introduce yourself.

Currently, I work at Michelin-starred JOHN chef’s hall as Head Sommelier and Beverage Manager. My daily responsibilities include creating wine lists, selecting wines and other beverages, leading tastings, workshops, and training sessions, and advising customers on wine choices.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Finance from the Banku Augstskola, a Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 3 qualification obtained in London, and an ASI Level 2 (Association de la Sommellerie Internationale) certificate. I am currently pursuing the WSET Diploma (Level 4) at the Austrian Wine Academy, with the goal of achieving DipWSET and Wine Academicar credentials.

I was crowned Latvian Sommelier Champion in 2024, and in 2025, I placed third in Latvia and fourth in the Baltic Sommelier Championship. I enjoy helping people find wines that perfectly match their taste, budget, and purpose – whether for enjoyment or collection.
