Just hours after the Oscars were handed out in Hollywood, Munich hosted its own film premiere: “Ein Sommer in Italien – WM 1990” with the stars of the 1990 World Cup-winning team. The documentary chronicles Germany’s triumphant run to the title in Italy.

The premiere drew a star-studded crowd to Munich, with nearly all of the ’90s heroes and former assistant coach Holger Osieck (77) in attendance. Bayern’s Minister President Markus Söder (59) was also present, personally invited by Lothar Matthäus (64), who had previously lost a Bavarian Order of Merit during a move and later received a replacement from Söder on his 60th birthday.

The atmosphere was filled with emotion as viewers relived the iconic moments of the 1990 World Cup. Lothar Matthäus (64) reflected on the team’s unity, stating, “I remember the togetherness in the team. It was a great atmosphere and Rudi Völler said a few months ago: He won the World Cup with his friends.”

Pierre Littbarski (65) was visibly moved by the film, saying, “The first time it was strange, but the second time tears came to my eyes. It really takes you back to your younger years and makes you wish you could experience that time again.”

The film revisits the historic moment on July 8, 1990, when Andy Brehme’s penalty secured Germany’s third World Cup title. Matthäus fondly remembered the late Brehme, who passed away in February 2024, saying, “When something like this film brings it back, I think: Wow, what we experienced together. I still have some mementos at home. We were roommates, experienced a lot privately, and had a good time.”

Brehme’s longtime partner, Susanne Schaefer, and Heidi Beckenbauer also attended the premiere. The audience of around 1,000 viewers erupted in applause during key moments of the match, particularly Brehme’s winning goal.

The team last gathered in Herzogenaurach in the summer of 2025 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of their World Cup victory at Adidas headquarters. This premiere offered another opportunity for a reunion, with Jutta Speidel, Bärbel Schäfer, and Giulia Siegel also in attendance.

The film was inspired by the SPIEGEL bestseller “Wir Helden von Rom” by freelance sports journalist Nils Suling, who was also in Munich for the premiere.

Littbarski playfully appears as a reporter in the film, reversing roles and interviewing reporters – including BILD legend Benno Weber – to alleviate boredom during downtime.
