A wolf was shot and killed Friday in the Landeck district of Tyrol, Austria, after repeatedly being sighted near residential areas. The animal had been identified as a “risk wolf” due to its proximity to homes.

The order authorizing the shooting was issued Friday, and the wolf was killed later that evening, according to a statement released Saturday by the state of Tyrol. The move underscores the ongoing challenges of managing wildlife populations near human settlements.

Report Sightings

“Repeated detections in the immediate vicinity of inhabited areas have made it clear that action was needed. I thank the local hunters for their swift action,” said Josef Geisler, a state deputy governor. The shooting order was lifted following the animal’s death.

The state is asking the public to report any further sightings using a form available on its website. This incident follows a similar event in February, when a wolf was killed in Kappl, in the Paznauntal region of the Landeck district.
