Residents of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, Belgium, reported an unusual odor Friday evening, prompting numerous calls to emergency services fearing a gas leak.
Authorities quickly determined the smell was not from a leak, but rather a byproduct of planned sewer operate being conducted by Vivaqua. The incident underscores the importance of clear communication regarding infrastructure projects to avoid unnecessary public alarm.
Firefighters confirmed there was no danger to the public. “The odor may be noticeable in several streets around Brand Whitlock Boulevard, Georges Henri Avenue, and Prince Héritier Avenue. There is no danger to the population. We therefore ask citizens not to call 112 for this nuisance, in order to maintain the lines available for real emergencies,” officials said.
