European Football Celebrates International Women’s Day
European football is marking International Women’s Day, March 8th, with a series of initiatives and acknowledgements of the growing role of women in the sport.
UEFA, the Union of European Football Associations, is highlighting the contributions of women to all levels of the game, from players and coaches to administrators and fans. The organization, which governs football across Europe and parts of Asia, currently has 55 national association members. UEFA.com details the celebrations.
Several organizations are also taking steps to promote women’s football and address inequalities within the sport. Orange, for example, has launched a campaign called “The Match Before the Match” to showcase its commitment to the women’s game. jupdlc reports on this initiative.
Publicis Conseil, in partnership with Orange, is also working to raise awareness of the invisible barriers faced by women in football. La Montagne covered the campaign’s launch.
On a regional level, the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté League (BFC) in France is holding general meetings to discuss the development of women’s football within the region. Le Progrès details the league’s efforts.
These initiatives reflect a broader movement within European football to promote gender equality and create more opportunities for women in the sport. UEFA suspended all Russian national teams and clubs from FIFA and UEFA competitions following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, a decision that underscores the organization’s commitment to its values.
