Sagrada Familia Nears Completion After 140 Years of Construction
Barcelona – After more than 140 years of construction, the Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona is nearing completion, marking a monumental achievement in architectural history. The final piece of the tallest tower, the Tower of Jesus Christ, was installed in February, signaling the end of exterior construction on the iconic landmark.
The installation of the cross atop the Tower of Jesus Christ finalized the exterior work on the structure, which now stands as the tallest church in the world. The cross itself measures 4.5 x 4.5 meters and represents the highest point of the basilica. With this milestone, all six central towers of the Sagrada Familia are now structurally complete, according to reports.
The cross component was manufactured in modular form in Germany throughout 2025 and assembled primarily on-site at the Sagrada Familia. Ceramic glazing, internal stone structures, and stained glass were produced in various factories and workshops across Catalonia. The components were lifted in seven sections – the lower arm, the central core, four side arms, and finally the upper arm – with the final piece installed on February 20, 2026.
A sculpture of the Agnus Dei, created by Italian artist Andrea Mastrovito, will be placed at the highest point within the upper arm of the cross. The completion of the tower is expected to be formally commemorated on June 10, marking the centennial of architect Antoni Gaudí’s death and 16 years since the church was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI. A series of commemorative events and exhibitions are planned throughout the year, coinciding with Barcelona’s designation as the UNESCO World Capital of Architecture 2026.
While exterior construction is largely complete, interior work is slated to continue through 2027 and 2028. The basilica, initially designed in a neo-Gothic style, underwent a significant transformation under Gaudí’s vision, evolving into a stunning example of Catalan Modernism. Construction began in 1882, and the project is currently projected to be fully completed around the mid-2030s. The basilica’s recent achievement has seen it surpass the Ulmer Münster in Germany, which held the title of the world’s tallest church since 1890.
The Sagrada Familia officially became the world’s tallest church on October 30, 2025, reaching a height of 162.91 meters, exceeding the Ulmer Münster’s 161.53 meters. Upon full completion, the basilica is projected to reach a total height of 172 meters. The foundation notes that 17 of the 18 towers originally envisioned by Gaudí are now finished. This milestone underscores the enduring legacy of Gaudí’s architectural vision and the dedication of generations of builders.
