WSU Track & Field Sweeps 5k, Wins DMR at MPSF Championships

Reno, Nevada – Washington State dominated the opening day of the MPSF Championships, highlighted by a sweep of the top five spots in the Men’s 5000m and a decisive victory in the Women’s Distance Medley Relay.

Solomon Kipchoge led the charge for the Cougs, claiming first place in the Men’s 5k with a time of 13 minutes, and 46.43 seconds. The race was a thrilling battle with teammate Evans Kurui, who finished just a second behind in 13 minutes and 47.61 seconds. Josphat Meli secured third place with an impressive time of 14 minutes and 15.70 seconds, further showcasing Washington State’s strength in the distance event. Senior Muhammed Ahmed and junior Kutoven Stevens rounded out the top five for the Cougars, finishing with times of 14 minutes and 18.02 seconds and 14 minutes and 18.39 seconds, respectively.

The Washington State women also delivered a strong performance, winning the Women’s Distance Medley Relay in a time of 11 minutes and 31.83 seconds. The relay team comprised of Mercy Biwott, Lashanna Graham, Daphne Evenson, and Rosemary Longisa. Biwott started strong in the 1200m, Graham maintained momentum through the 400m, Evenson kept the team competitive in the 800m, and Longisa closed with a remarkable final leg, moving from seventh to first to secure the win.

In the Women’s 5000m, Caroline Jepkorir set a new personal best, finishing fourth with a time of 17 minutes and 0.48 seconds. Kylah Madariaga closely followed, finishing fifth in 17 minutes and 0.54 seconds – just six-hundredths of a second behind her teammate.

The Cougars also secured a third-place finish in the Men’s Distance Medley Relay, with a time of 10 minutes and 5.69 seconds.

Competition at the MPSF Championships continues Monday starting at 9 a.m.
